Joseph
Pilates regarded the abdominal region, in conjunction with the deep
spinal muscles as the center,
or “powerhouse” of the body. He perceived this powerhouse
as a “girdle of strength”,
connecting the deep internal muscles of the abdomen with the lower
back muscles and the buttocks.
The underlying principle of Pilates exercises is to hold this core
midsection still, strong and stable
while carrying out precise movements of the arms, legs and upper torso.
However, he also insisted that
these core muscles should be consciously engaged only as an integral
part of a workout,
fitness regime or load-lifting activity, not as a separate repetitive
exercise!
The benefits of practicing Pilates floor exercises are many. They
develop every aspect of physical fitness:
strength, flexibility, coordination, speed, agility and endurance.
They heighten body awareness, enhance body control, teach correct
muscle activation,
correct posture and alignment, and improve balance
and proprioception. The focus on breathing reduces stress and serves
to link the body and mind.
Pilates is also an excellent way to cross-train for athletic pursuits
and daily activities.
Pilates TBS - Total Body Sculpting
When combining Pilates exercises
with total body sculpting (TBS), the use of resistance,
(light hand weights, elastic bands, resistance circles or body weight),
increases the intensity level of the exercises and they become more
challenging.
